New Mexico Weight Distance Tax (NM WDT)

The state of New Mexico charges a Weight Distance Tax (WDT) for operators of commercial vehicles with a gross weight exceeding 26,000 pounds while traveling on its highways. This tax is calculated depending on the vehicle’s weight and mileage inside the state. Although annual payment options are available, the tax generally follows a quarterly payment schedule.

Important Information on the New Mexico Weight Distance Tax

NM Weight Distance Tax and how it applies to your commercial vehicle operations:

• Registration Requirements
Every allowing vehicle must get an Electronic Permit for the New Mexico Weight Distance Tax to assure compliance with state highway usage restrictions. This permit permits automobiles to lawfully travel on New Mexico roadways while adhering to state tax requirements.

• Plate Types
Intrastate Travel: Vehicles registered in New Mexico and used just within the state (intrastate) are granted a particular weight-distance plate.
Interstate Travel: Vehicles driving across state borders are issued an International Registration Plan (IRP) plate instead.

• Filing Tax Returns
Weight distance tax returns are due quarterly to the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) and can be submitted online via the MVD Online Services site. Quarterly filings keep vehicle operators compliant and provide for precise tracking of miles traveled inside the state.

• Tax Deadlines
Tax returns and payments are due on the following dates each year:
First Quarter (January through March): Payment due by April 30
Second Quarter (April through June): Payment due by July 31
Third Quarter (July through September): Payment due by October 31
Fourth Quarter (October through December): Payment due by January 31

Charges for late filing and payment

Failure to file on time or pay the tax by the due date may result in fines. The penalty is computed by increasing the outstanding debt by 2% for each month of delay, up to a maximum of 10% of the total tax owed. Failure to file carries a minimum penalty of $5.

Interest for late payments

If the tax is not paid by the due date, a daily interest rate of 0.041% is charged to the outstanding sum until the payment is made.
