California (CA) Oversize/Overweight Permit LEGAL DIMENSIONS

  • 75 feet (65 feet on non-designated highways)
  • 48 feet semitrailer

Note: 53 feet semi-trailers are not legal except if the kingpin to the center of the rear axle does not exceed 40 feet. Longer trailers can be permitted only if they are stretched for a specific load, or they can otherwise be justified by the load.

Overhang: 10 feet as long as length including overhang does not surpass 75 feet overall.

Width: 8 feet 6 inches

Height: 14 feet (over height not allowed on a flatbed, see next section)

Weight: 80,000 Gross pounds

  • Steer – 12,500 pounds
  • Single – 20,000 pounds
  • Tandem – 34,000 pounds
  • Tridem – relies upon axle spread, Spread Axle Tandem (10 feet to 10 feet 2 inches spread) is legal at 40,000 pounds (20,000 – 20,000) pounds

California (CA) Oversize/Overweight  Routine Permit Limits:

Length: Generally up to 135 feet

Overhang: When the back overhang puts the tractor/trailer over 75 feet total lengths, California may deny a permit and require the load to be on an extended trailer.

Width: 15 feet

Height: Depends on route. Over lawful height is not allowed on a flatbed trailer except if the load length justifies the use of a flatbed.

  • Steer – 12,500 pounds
  • Single – 20,000 pounds
  • Tandem – 46,000* pounds
  • Tridem – 58,061 to 60,000* pounds
  • *These differ depending on axle spacing and routes (ex: Tridem with 9 feet of spacing can get 59,168 pounds). Spread axle tandems (8 feet to 10 feet 2 inches spread) can have 40,000 pounds most maximum. Tridem with over 10 feet spacing (5 feet – 5 feet) can only be allowed for 40,000 pounds maximum.

Over 15 feet wide, 17 feet high or 135 feet long are viewed as super loads.

California (CA) Oversize/ Overweight Escort Requirements (PILOT CARS):

  • Over 100 feet in Los Angeles City – two escorts
  • Over 120 feet to 135 feet – more than one escort

Overhang: Over 30 feet front or back – at least one escort.

  • Over 12 feet – one or two escorts (Some nearby routes might require escorts under 12 feet).
  • Over 13 feet on two-lane – two escorts on specific routes.
  • Over 14 feet 11 inches on expressway or four-lane – two escorts
  • Over 16 feet (over 15 feet on two-lane) additionally needs CHP escorts (three CHPs)

Height: Over 18 feet – one escort with high pole, utility clearance, and route survey. CHP escorts may also be required. If an escort is desired for a lower height, it should be expressed on the grant, or you will be dependent upon a fine.

MISCELLANEOUS: No back overhang is permitted for loaded shipping containers; 5 feet back is permitted for empties. Over height is not allowed for shipping containers. Buckets, blades, and counterweights don’t require to be removed. A blade can be detached and hauled on the same trailer with an overweight dozer, however, the permit must state it (“blade detached and reloaded”). Permits are not issued for tow-away without an inspection report on the tow-away unit, or Cal-Trans authorization and inspection appointment. If the tow-away unit is not enrolled, it also requires a temporary CA enlistment, which will be ordered when the permit is ordered. Four-axle tractors must have a CA examination report or permission and examination arrangement. Single axle jeeps and boosters should have a Caltrans inspection before they can be allowed in California.

SIGNS, FLAGS & LIGHTS: Signs and flags are needed on vehicles over 8 feet 6 inches wide, over 80 feet long, or with over 10 feet overhang. Signs are also required when overweight only.  For night running, amber marker lights are needed at the front corners of the load and one on left outside extreme edge, apparent from the front and sides, and red at the back corners visible from the back and sides. Los Angeles County also needs the amber lights at all projections and 5 feet intervals completely around the load (and red in the rear), not over 5 feet over ground level. A rear overhang is 4 feet or greater and requires at least two lights or a backlight bar at night. Backlight bar not needed on long load in daylight except if turn signals and brake lights are hidden by the load.

Trailers surpassing 48 feet in length are not legal in California except if the kingpin to the center of the rear axle does not exceed 40 feet! Longer trailers can be allowed only when justified by the length of the load.
